The JANSSEN dynasty has earned the distinction of royalty in the racing pigeon kingdom

The Janssen pigeons need no introduction, by me, as their results speak for themselves, the world over. There is a saying that if you need to strengthen your colony you have to introduce Janssen bloodlines.

The Janssen evolution for the past eight decades is legendary. Not only did they become a marketing brand in racing pigeon circles but they continue to dominate at the game of pigeon racing today.

History Brief

Stemming back to the old ‘Schalie 32’ of 1932, through the influence of ‘Blauwe’ of 1948, the ‘Bange’ of 1951 and their descendents, ‘Merckx’, ‘Oude Witoger’, ‘Geeloger’, ‘Oude Raket, ‘De Stier’ and their descendents, ‘Jonge Merckx’, his brother ‘019’, his brothers son ‘Schouwman’, ‘Winterjonge’, ‘Afgekeurde’, ‘De Vos’, ‘Chantilly’ and the list goes on to the present day matriarchs and patriarchs such as ‘Princess’ and ‘Septemberman’, linebred descendents of ‘Merckx’ through ‘Eksteroog’ and ‘Afgekeurde’, ‘Laat Blauwe’, linebred to ‘Oude Merckx’ through ‘Kapot Borsbeen’, ‘Winterjong’ and ‘Vos Volliere’, ‘Klamper’, linebred to ‘019’ and ‘Jonge Merckx’ through ‘Winterjongen’ and ‘Oude Lichten’, ‘Beatrixdoffer’ and the many others, they continue to dominate the world of pigeon racing.

Over the decades many fanciers have build names for themselves based on pigeons from the Janssen dynasty. Jules Wouters, became the fancier of his time when he purchased the ‘Geeloger’ of 1967 and crossed it into his family. Grondelaers, became more competitive when he bought a son out of ‘De Blauwe’ of 1948 and many more thereafter. Raymond Hermes bought a baby from Janssen that became a 15 x 1st prize winner, he named it ‘De Velo’. Jos De Klak built another powerful winning dynasty based on Janssen pigeons.

Present Day Success

In more recent times, a study of the origins of some of the most prolific pigeons of the last two decades, soon reveal the foundation for the lofts of Flor Engels, Van Loon, Houben and Verbruggen where there has been strong Janssen influence. Also of importance are Van Dyke (Zoon ‘Oude Witpen ‘77’, GGSire to ‘Kannibaal’) and Koopman (‘De 48’ from‘Raket 84’and ‘Gouden Duifje’ both direct Janssen Arendonk) sired ‘Eric’, ‘BeatrixDoffer’ and brother ‘De Zitter’ who have all since generated successful dynasties of their own. Hans Eijerkamp and their extremely successful Janssen family including ‘James Bond’, ‘Romario’, ‘Generaal’, ‘Annie’, ‘Silvester’, ‘Porche Bond’ and their offspring have also stamped their presence the world over. There are many more famous names that have built their colonies on Janssen genes including Drapa, Prange, Stieneker, Lang to name but a few.

In South Africa too, the Janssens have endeared many fanciers, including the likes of Frans Fouche, Bulla De Lange, Monty vd Bergs’ ‘1801’ and many others too numerous to mention. George Reads’ famous ‘Durban Hen’, a five time winner was also of Janssen descent. The highly prized Tom Lock family of pigeons also have a lot of Janssen blood in their veins, but one that has become legend is the name of ‘Spritzy’ whos foundation is to be found in the Janssen Arendonk cock Belg-84-6726559 sired by the ‘Vos Volliere of 81’ (Janssen Arendonk) and his dam Belg-76- 6129245 (Janssen Arendonk) who was also dam to ‘019’ when mated to ‘Merckx’.

Champion Results

F
or reference (just some of the SUPER Janssen stalwarts):

‘Oude Merckx’ 21 x 1st
‘Jonge Merckx’ 15 x 1st
‘019’ 18 x 1st
‘Velo’ 15 x 1st
‘Oude Witoger’ 10 x 1st
‘Oude Geeloger’ 16 x 1st
‘Geeloger’ 15 x 1st
‘Schouwman’ 6 x 1st

These are only a few of the originals but with astonishing results, at a time when there were tenfold the amount of pigeon fanciers that there are today. It’s no wonder the Janssen prepotency permeates through so many current day successful lofts.

It was often rumoured that Janssens could only race in short and fast races, but this is a misconception as Janssen brothers proved themselves, but even more telling is the likes of ‘George Bush’ (SA TRPF 94 1448) of James Moore who sired no less than three separate Matjiesfontein winners and then there is of course the legendary bc hen (SA-94-148211) who also won from Matjiesfontein, earning 3rd WRRPU for Cas Mathee. There are many others too.

Statistics

A recent study of the top 30 pigeons for MDPR 2013 and top 20 pigeons at Allflite 2013, based on averages, revealed that 23% of the birds have direct Janssen descendency in their pedigree. The study further revealed that of the first 30 pigeons MDPR 2013 final race and the first 20 pigeons Allflite final race as much as 30% have direct Janssen origin in their pedigree, including MDPR winner, ‘Untamed Desert’ bred by H. Eijerkamp, with paternal Gdam (‘Miss Saigon’) being pure Janssen Arendonk. Also the second pigeon at Allflite, bred by Helmut Mann, has the paternal Gsire of direct Janssen origin.

My involvement with Janssens began nearly 15 years ago when I first bought the ‘Rambo Hen’ from SCMDPR, who was the sister of 1st Ace Pigeon SCMDPR ’99. This hen was bred by Marc De Cock of Belgium and is the daughter of his famous ‘De Rambo’, who had sired numerous winners and champion pigeons. This hens’ offspring soon began to show results, not only for myself, but also for other fanciers who were fortunate enough to obtain some babies off her.

I have been blessed to be able to acquire some of the best Janssen champion genes available, including various direct imports from Piet Manders, various top Janssens from the lofts of Cas Mathee, including a son and grand daughter of his ’30 x Winner’, which he imported from Herbots, as well as the hen that won him Matjiesfontein (3rd WRRPU). No money was spared as I continued to purchase the very best pure Janssens that I could find including offspring of George Reads’ ‘Magic Pair’ amongst many others.

Here is an opportunity for fanciers to acquire some of the best performance Janssen genes available.
